Our First One Day Event

We took the plunge, and even though we felt a little unprepared, we entered our first ODE! Louie took it all in his stride, and behaved impeccably, even wanting to do more when we'd finished!

We hadn't done a dressage since the beginning of July so Louie was a little excited and tense in the warm up. But he soon settled and worked nicely before heading into his test.

I was pleased with our test and how well he relaxed and was obedient throughout.

The running order was a bit strange and you did you cross country before the SJ due to the layout of the venue.

We had a quick walk, and it was a nice little course, nothing more than logs to jump over. Perfect for your first ODE and only ever second attempt at cross country!

I decided to just let Louie go at his own pace, and find his own feet on the course to find his own confidence. He set off with his ears pricked and feeling like he had a big smile on his face. Andrew managed to film a few of the fences throughout the course.

Finally, we went onto showjumping. Louie was very keen, and made some strange distances for small jumps look too easy! It wasn't a perfect round and we need to work on making things more fluid and consistent, especially when he is keen around the corners, but I'm pleased overall to have jumped clear and finish our first ODE!

We had to enter the class as HC due to a restriction on the showjumping (horse not to have any placing in any jumping class), but the day for us wasn't really about competing, but instead was a learning curve and giving Louie some experience. We had a great day and we can wait to do more!
